La La Land wins record seven Golden Globes as Moonlight takes best drama
La La Land continued its seemingly unstoppable charge toward the Oscars with a record-breaking night at the Golden Globes. It won seven awards, including best acting gongs for Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone and best director for Damien Chazelle, but Moonlight – which had been snubbed throughout the evening – took home best picture drama.
Producers Jordan Horowitz and Fred Berger took the stage to accept the award on the film's behalf alongside part of the cast—including Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling—and crew who stood arm-in-arm and couldn't help but smile over the huge accomplishment.
"The idea of making an original L.A.-set musical was an utter fantasy, so to be standing here tonight is more surreal than I can possibly describe," Berger told the audience.
In an emotional speech, Gosling thanked his wife, actor Eva Mendes, for her support.
"You don’t get to be up here without standing on the shoulders of a mountain of people, and there’s just no time to thank everyone," he said. "I’d just like to try and thank one person properly. While I was dancing and playing piano and having one of the best experiences I’ve ever had on a film, my lady was raising our daughter, pregnant with our second, and trying to help her brother fight his battle with cancer."
Backstage, Damien Chazelle, director of the movie told reporters he was still "processing" the musical's record-setting wins: "This is my first time ever at the Golden Globes. I assume it doesn't [always] go this way. But I was just so honored to be here at all." bla
Moonlight took home the Golden Globe for best motion picture, drama, on Sunday night. It tells the story of a gay African-American boy growing up in the impoverished Liberty City neighborhood of Miami.
Meryl Streep added the Cecil B. DeMille Award to her healthy heap of Golden Globes on Sunday night.
