Some clever vandals transformed the classic Hollywood sign into a stoner's paradise sometime overnight on New Year's Day. The transformation is actually quite appropriate considering California voted in November to legalize recreational marijuana, informs Esquire. The sign was restored and again looks like Hollywood.

The Los Angeles Police Department's Security Services Division told CNBC that the pranksters used tarps to create the effect of changing the sign's 'O's to 'E's. Police are investigating the incident as an act of trespassing.

Social media users quickly noticed the howler, and took to Twitter to express their surprise and bemusement. The sign was restored.

Strangely, this is not the first time that this has happened. On New Year's Day in 1976, vandals pulled the same stunt and changed Hollywood into Hollyweed after a state law passed that decriminalized the possession of small amounts of marijuana, according to History.com
