The leader of the Liberal Party Mihai Ghimpu, who runs for the office of President of Moldova, said the billion theft from the Moldovan banking system must investigated by competent U.S. institutions able to conduct investigations at international level. He promised that if he is elected Head of State, he will request the U.S. authorities to authorize the investigation of the theft.

Mihai Ghimpu said it has been two years since the banking frauds became known and, according to him, all the traces will disappear in a year and it will be impossible to track the money. He noted that he consulted experts and found out that the American FBI can carry out investigations at international level and, unlike Kroll, can confiscate the discovered money.

According to the Liberal Party leader, now, as an MP, he cannot make such an approach to the U.S., but the President has such powers. However, as an MP, Mihai Ghimpu promises to register two legislative initiatives aimed at recovering the money stolen from the banking system, IPN reports.

Mihai Ghimpu also said that he will request the prosecutor general to investigate all those involved in this theft, including members of the then Cabinet and of the Administration Board of the National Bank of Moldova.

The chairman of the Liberal Party noted that if the Republic of Moldova had been a member of the NATO and the EU, that theft wouldn’t have been possible because the status of member enables to secure the national banking system.

Minister of Transport Iurie Chirinciuc, who earlier was a member of the parliamentary commission of inquiry into the banking system theft, said all the competent bodies informed the senior administration about the situation in the banking system, but no reaction followed. If the office of President had been held by such a person as Mihai Ghimpu, this would have prevented such a theft. In 2013 the Liberals were eliminated from government because they were inconvenient to those who were robbing the banking system.
