The prosecutor’s offices of Botanica, Buiucani, Centru, Ciocana and Rascani districts of Chisinau and the Chisinau Prosecutor’s Office will merge into one prosecutor’s office – the Prosecutor’s Office of Chisinau municipality. This provision of the new Law on the Prosecution Service takes effect on January 1, 2017. The tangible and intangible assets and archives of the district prosecutor’s offices of Chisinau and the files and other documents managed by these will be transmitted to the Prosecutor’s Office of Chisinau municipality.

Prosecutor of Chisinau Igor Popa said the new body will have over 180 employees and 66 consultants. The heads of district prosecutor’s offices of Chisinau will serve as deputy prosecutors of Chisinau until their terms in office expire.

The Law stipulates that the heads of district prosecutor’s offices of Chisinau will serve as deputy prosecutors of Chisinau until their terms in office expire. The head offices of the district prosecutor’s offices of Chisinau will be kept.

The prosecutor’s office of Gagauzia has already gone through a similar process. Prosecutor’s offices of Ceadir-Lunga, Comrat and Vulcanesti merged into one prosecutor on 1 August 2016 – Gagauzia Prosecutor’s Office. Also, on 1 August, the prosecutor’s offices of level of the Courts of Appeal (Chisinau, Cahul, Bender and Balti), military prosecutor’s offices (Chisinau, Balti and Cahul), as well as transport prosecutor’s office have ceased activity.

Prosecutor General Eduard Harunjen told at a news conference that the changes that were made and are yet to be made derive from the institutional reform commitments. They will optimize the internal working processes and, respectively, will improve the management of human resources.

The reform of the prosecution service is a priority of the Government program and of the Justice sector reform strategy. The activities in the field are carried out and promoted concertedly by the state authorities, with the active involvement of the national and foreign partners.
