Supreme Council of National Defense (CSAT) from Bucharest approved today an action plan on a long and medium term for the relationship of Romania with Moldova, announced the president Klaus Iohannis. He said on Tuesday that Romania wants to support Moldova to have powerful institutions. Also, he pointed out that a single person, be him the President, cannot fundamentally affect the relation between Romania and the Republic of Moldova

"What is this strategy? It's a strategic action plan to address the relationship between Romania and Moldova starting from evaluating the current state of the relationship in the complicated European context, including the recent events that took place in Moldova", said the Romanian President.

"I said in September (...) and reiterate now that the relationship with the Republic of Moldova is extremely important and this should become better, more pragmatic and predictable. (...) The European integration of the Republic of Moldova is our strategic objective, as it is shown in the plan that we approved today. For this we need to systemize our effort, so that the results are concrete and palpable for the citizens of the Republic of Moldova. Of course, the realization of this journey depends not only of Romanian citizens but also of Moldovan ones, who should accelerate the European path and integration strategies in the European Union” Iohannis said at the Cotroceni Palace after the Council’s meeting.

He noted that Romania’s effort will be systemized and concentrated institutionally so that the results are concrete and palpable for the citizens of the Republic of Moldova.

"An inter-institutional working group will be set up to implement the plan of action, under the coordination of the presidential administration. This will start work in the nearest future", Iohannis added.

In September, President Klaus Iohannis said that Romania should support Moldova economically and engage in building and strengthening democratic institutions in Chisinau, a special strategy in this regard will be examined, including the unification of the two states.

Iohannis also said that the union between Romania and Moldova will be addressed by the strategy, but not in terms of the electoral campaign following on both sides of the Prut. "Moldova is a very important topic for us, that interests me very much," said the Romanian President. Iohannis has shown that the Presidential Administration is preparing a strategy in this regard, which will be the fruit of MFA contribution, SIE, SRI and Cotroceni Palace. "The discussion about a possible union will be treated in the strategy which we will be discussed in CSAT at the end of the year", concluded the head of state.
